Founded in the 1850s, Oakwood Cemetery is one of the city’s oldest cemeteries. It is a City of Austin Historic Landmark, a registered Historic Texas Cemetery, and a National Register of Historic Places site.

Oakwood Cemetery is a favorite dark Austin destination. People go to explore the grounds and take in the history; to check out the art of the headstones and memorials; have a picnic lunch or an evening date. Occasionally seances and weddings are performed in the cemetery.
