This month\, we celebrate Halloween with a 4K remastered screening of the Spanish-language version of DRACULA (1931). Guests can get tickets for our usual Wednesday slot on October 30 or catch the encore on October 31st. Get ready to discover the lesser-known rendition of this gothic classic! \nDRACULA (Spanish-language Version)\nA film by George Melford\nUnited States\, 1931\nHorror\, 104 min\, Black & White\nSpanish with English subtitles \nSynopsis- Soon after beginning work for Conde Dracula (Carlos Villarias)\, the clerk Renfield (Pablo Alvarez Rubio) learns that his employer is\, in fact\, a vampire who lives on human blood. Now under Dracula’s spell\, Renfield helps his master travel to London\, where the vampire takes another victim (Carmen Guerrero). Dracula also has eyes on the lovely Eva (Lupita Tovar)\, but her fiancé\, Juan Harker (Barry Norton)\, and a wise professor named Van Helsing (Eduardo Arozamena) seek to stop him. \nMore about the film-\nThis alternate version of the Bela Lugosi classic was produced for a burgeoning foreign market. A completely separate crew worked at night\, used the same sets\, and reshot the film in Spanish; resulting in a vastly different movie with a unique cultural interpretation. \nMany consider this version superior to the American version. With the second crew not bound by the “Hays Code” that censored Hollywood films\, they better conveyed the sensual subtext of vampire mythology that is missing in the original. HYDE\, Lillian Gish’s THE WIND\, and so many others. \n\n\n\nThe Invincible Czars have updated their soundtrack for NOSFERATU in preparation to release a recording for the film’s centennial in 2022. This will be the debut of the updated score incorporating violin\, organ\, flute\, bass clarinet\, drums\, percussion\, vocals\, music box\, synthesizers\, electric guitar\, piano\, and many sound effects performed live and in-theater by only five performers. Drawing from the realm of classical music\, Invincible Czars’ score incorporates original music inspired by Bela Bartok’s Roumanian Folk Dances as a nod to the fictional Count Orlok’s home turf. \n\n\n\nDirected by F.W. Murnau and starring the terrifying Max Schreck\, NOSFERATU is one of the most revered films in the history of cinema\, and the very first – and possibly best – adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film would nearly be erased from the history books after the estate of Bram Stoker sued the filmmakers for copyright infringement\, and nearly all the prints of the movie were destroyed. Only a few survived\, and this performance features the most complete existing version.

Now under Dracula’s spell\, Renfield helps his master travel to London\, where the vampire takes another victim (Carmen Guerrero). Dracula also has eyes on the lovely Eva (Lupita Tovar)\, but her fiancé\, Juan Harker (Barry Norton)\, and a wise professor named Van Helsing (Eduardo Arozamena) seek to stop him. \nMore about the film-\nThis alternate version of the Bela Lugosi classic was produced for a burgeoning foreign market. A completely separate crew worked at night\, used the same sets\, and reshot the film in Spanish; resulting in a vastly different movie with a unique cultural interpretation. \nMany consider this version superior to the American version. With the second crew not bound by the “Hays Code” that censored Hollywood films\, they better conveyed the sensual subtext of vampire mythology that is missing in the original.
