SUMMARY:Ghost Almanac
DESCRIPTION:What if the devil was a VJ? This film screening and live music performance features the best scenes from classic horror films soundtracked live by the vintage synthesizer enthusiasts of Montopolis. Tales from the Crypt meets VH1 in this 80 minute roller coaster ride of terror and old school beats. This will be the (hopefully) triumphant return of Montopolis to Austin after 2 months on the road. They should have their performance pretty dialed in. Gonna be a fun night! Come in costume of course! \nWatch the trailer: https://youtu.be/rm11ZWhhjBU?si=tRp4C-keQkjdRHI0 \nHere is a list of the film excerpts that will be included in this year’s show: The Skeleton Dance (1929)Haxan (1922)The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)The Haunted House\, Buster Keaton (1921) (the complete short film) L’Inferno (1911)Betty Boop’s Halloween Party (1933)The Vanishing Lady (1896)Nosferatu (1922) \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2579116802429602/

SUMMARY:POLYESTER in Odorama + CECIL B. DEMENTED With John Waters
DESCRIPTION:The Paramount Theatre PresentsPolyester in Odorama+Cecil B. DementedWith John Waters LIVEThe Paramount TheatreFriday\, October 17\, 2025 \nDoors: 7pmPolyester: 8pmCecil B. Demented: 10:30pm \nDouble Feature: This ticket gets you into both films\, but you are also welcome to attend just one. The second film will screen after a brief intermission. \nThe Pope of Trash himself\, John Waters\, returns to the Paramount to provide a live\, in-person commentary for POLYESTER\, screening in glorious Odorama\, followed by a live introduction of CECIL B. DEMENTED\, celebrating its 25th anniversary! If you joined us for last year’s deliriously filthy double feature of PINK FLAMINGOS and FEMALE TROUBLE – or heard about it later and were filled with punishing regret – you know this is a night you do not want to miss! \nYour ticket purchase includes an Odorama card fabricated by Kaleidoscope Concepts\, the same company entrusted to create the cards that were included with the Criterion Collection Blu-Ray of Polyester in 2019 \nPOLYESTER in Odorama1981\, 86min/color\, DCPDirected by: John WatersCast: Divine\, Tab Hunter\, Edith Massey\, David Samson\, Mink Stole\, and Stiv Bators. \nJohn Waters reteams with Divine to pay loving tribute – in the darkly comedic way only they could – to the Technicolor melodrama masterpieces of Douglas Sirk (ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS\, MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION) and the publicity genius of William Castle (13 GHOSTS\, THE TINGLER). Divine and Tab Hunter stand in for Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson and skewer 80s suburban domesticity\, and the audience is right there with them thanks to Odorama scratch-and-sniff cards that give you 10 reasons to rethink having a sense of smell. \nCECIL B. DEMENTED25th Anniversary!2000\, 88min/color\, DCPDirected by: John WatersCast: Melanie Griffith\, Stephen Dorff\, Alicia Witt\, Adrian Grenier\, Mink Stole\, Ricki Lake\, Michael Shannon\, and Patricia Hearst. \nJohn Waters assembles a knockout cast for this riff on the 1974 Patricia Hearst kidnapping\, with Melanie Griffith starring as an A-list actress who gets kidnapped by an outlaw filmmaking collective led by the title character (Stephen Dorff) and is forced to star in his increasingly unhinged masterpiece. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1049975287056268/

SUMMARY:Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas - Film w/ Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:One of Tim Burton’s most celebrated films\, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas\, will be projected on the big screen with dialog and effects accompanied by Danny Elfman’s enigmatic score played live by your Austin Symphony Orchestra! \nThe film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington\, Halloween Town’s beloved Pumpkin King. Bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine of Halloween\, Jack longs to try something new. Convinced that he can spread the joy of Christmas and against the advice of Sally\, a caring and clever ragdoll\, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters – Lock\, Shock\, and Barrel – to kidnap Santa Claus. SUMMARY:BLOODY & BRUISED: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE BACK ROOM
DESCRIPTION:5th Annual Sound Unseen Film + Music Festival \nAustin Film SocietySaturday\, December 14\, 2024Tickets: $15 \n8:45 pm Doors // 9:15 pm Movie: Featuring a post screening Q&A with director J. Budro Partida and other crew members. \nCo-Presented by: Austin Film Society\, KUTX\, Liaison Creative Marketing and Frances Modern Inn \nFilm Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czm44rYy6SI \nA documentary feature film that chronicles one of the most notoriously known (and often disregarded) music venues in Austin\, Texas. It’s a film that spans the 33 year history of the east Riverside club\, from its meager beginnings in the early 70s as a watering hole for country folk and bikers\, to its glory years of 80s glam rock and metal\, through its 90s grunge and hardcore era\, and into the early 2000s punk and hip hop scene\, before it’s demise in 2006. The film tells the story of the club through nearly 70 interviews with various musicians\, former staff\, journalists\, and fans\, and incorporates thousands of pieces of archive videos\, photos\, ticket stubs\, flyers\, and even highly stylized reenactments. (Directed by J. Budro Partida\, 104 min.\, USA\, 2024). \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/8322058311232928/

SUMMARY:Nosferatu (1922) with Invincible Czars
DESCRIPTION:Alamo Drafthouse is proud to present the return of an annual Halloween tradition – Invincible Czars’ live score for NOSFERATU. Since 2006\, the Austin-based band has been performing well-crafted and critically-acclaimed original silent film scores for THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI\, Lon Chaney’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA\, John Barrymore’s DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE\, Lillian Gish’s THE WIND\, and so many others. \n\n\n\nThe Invincible Czars have updated their soundtrack for NOSFERATU in preparation to release a recording for the film’s centennial in 2022. This will be the debut of the updated score incorporating violin\, organ\, flute\, bass clarinet\, drums\, percussion\, vocals\, music box\, synthesizers\, electric guitar\, piano\, and many sound effects performed live and in-theater by only five performers. Drawing from the realm of classical music\, Invincible Czars’ score incorporates original music inspired by Bela Bartok’s Roumanian Folk Dances as a nod to the fictional Count Orlok’s home turf. \n\n\n\nDirected by F.W. Murnau and starring the terrifying Max Schreck\, NOSFERATU is one of the most revered films in the history of cinema\, and the very first – and possibly best – adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film would nearly be erased from the history books after the estate of Bram Stoker sued the filmmakers for copyright infringement\, and nearly all the prints of the movie were destroyed. Only a few survived\, and this performance features the most complete existing version.

SUMMARY:Halloween (1978)
DESCRIPTION:In 1978\, legendary New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael reviewed John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN. She didn’t like it. \n\n\n\n“HALLOWEEN has a pitiful\, amateurish script (by Carpenter and his producer\, Debra Hill). An escaped lunatic wielding a kitchen knife stalks people in a small Midwestern town (Haddonfield\, Illinois)\, and that’s about it. Maybe when a horror film is stripped of everything but dumb scariness – when it isn’t ashamed to revive the stalest device of the genre (the escaped lunatic) – it satisfies part of the audience in a more basic\, childish way than sophisticated horror pictures do.”

SUMMARY:CineNoche presents DRACULA (Spanish-language Version)
DESCRIPTION:Cine Las Americas and Violet Crown Cinema partner every last Wednesday of the month to present CineNoche\, a night of Latine\, Indigenous\, and Latin American films. This month\, we celebrate Halloween with a 4K remastered screening of the Spanish-language version of DRACULA (1931). Guests can get tickets for our usual Wednesday slot on October 30 or catch the encore on October 31st. Get ready to discover the lesser-known rendition of this gothic classic! \nDRACULA (Spanish-language Version)\nA film by George Melford\nUnited States\, 1931\nHorror\, 104 min\, Black & White\nSpanish with English subtitles \nSynopsis- Soon after beginning work for Conde Dracula (Carlos Villarias)\, the clerk Renfield (Pablo Alvarez Rubio) learns that his employer is\, in fact\, a vampire who lives on human blood. Now under Dracula’s spell\, Renfield helps his master travel to London\, where the vampire takes another victim (Carmen Guerrero). Dracula also has eyes on the lovely Eva (Lupita Tovar)\, but her fiancé\, Juan Harker (Barry Norton)\, and a wise professor named Van Helsing (Eduardo Arozamena) seek to stop him. \nMore about the film-\nThis alternate version of the Bela Lugosi classic was produced for a burgeoning foreign market. A completely separate crew worked at night\, used the same sets\, and reshot the film in Spanish; resulting in a vastly different movie with a unique cultural interpretation. \nMany consider this version superior to the American version. With the second crew not bound by the “Hays Code” that censored Hollywood films\, they better conveyed the sensual subtext of vampire mythology that is missing in the original. Additionally\, director George Melford made it more cinematic\, using sweeping shots and daring angles to tell the story (as a result\, it is also 30 minutes longer). \nThe Spanish-language DRACULA not only showcases the talents of its cast but also captures the timeless allure of Stoker’s tale\, establishing itself as a significant and provocative counterpart to the English-language version. \nEvent details-\nDates:\n–Wednesday\, October 30\, 2024 @ 7pm\n–Thursday\, October 31\, 2024 @ 7pm \nLocation:\n–Violet Crown Cinema\, 434 W 2nd St\, Austin\, TX 78701 \nCost:\n–$17.50\n–Free for CLA members. Contact membership@cinelasamericas.org for more information. \nLearn more & get tickets at cinelasamericas.org \nAbout Cine Las Americas-\nCine Las Americas (CLA) is a multi-cultural\, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Austin Texas\, offering theatrical screenings of films made by and/or about Latinxs and Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Films from Spain and Portugal are also included\, enhancing a truly Pan-American cinematic experience. \nAbout Violet Crown Cinema-\nViolet Crown is committed to celebrating and preserving the magic of cinema.

SUMMARY:Scary Movie +Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Q&A W/ DIRECTOR DANIEL ERICKSON!FREE BEER & MINI-POSTER \nOnly a handful of movies have captured the zeitgeist of Austin in the 1990s— this one did so to such an extent that then Austin Mayor\, Bruce Todd\, declared October 18th “Scary Movie Day.” We’ve got the receipts. No\, not that Scary Movie\, although there’s a great story involved in the title. Let director Daniel Erickson tell you all about it—in person. \nHands down\, this is one of the best Halloween movies ever made (right here in Austin)—so come enjoy a Shiner Bock or two. Grab a FREE limited-edition poster (who knows\, maybe Daniel Erickson will sign it?)\, and immerse yourself in the Austin of the 1990s through the eyes of Warren\, a perpetually paranoid dork played by a then-unknown actor\, John Hawkes—who just received an Emmy nod in 2024. Everything comes together in Scary Movie\, with stunning set design by poster icon Danny Garrett\, a rip-roaring score that includes The Butthole Surfers\, and surreal plot twists\, all incorporating into a film that punches far above its modest budget. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/563827606310563/

Helen believes that Candyman is an urban legend\, but soon discovers that the world is not as simple as her education has taught her. A rare 1990s horror film that has something to say – dealing with race and class along with a thought-provoking exploration of the nature and power of belief – this faithful adaptation of Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden” is a horror masterpiece. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1573207079937809/

When a patron is scratched by a prop displayed in the theatre lobby\, she transforms into a flesh-ripping demon! One by one\, the audience members mutate into horrible creatures hell-bent on destroying the world! Can anyone escape this gory orgy of terror? Regarded by horror fans as one of the greatest Italian splatter films ever made\, Lamberto Bava’s DEMONS is not only major cinematic nightmare fuel but also a hugely entertaining gore-fest. Produced by Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA\, TENEBRAE\, PHENOMENA)\, DEMONS features an amazing soundtrack of 80’s rock/heavy metal music by Billy Idol\, Scorpions\, Mötley Crüe\, Accept\, Saxon and more! \nPopcorn1991 | 91 min. | Color | DCPDirected by: Mark HerrierCast: Jill Schoelen\, Dee Wallace\, Ray Walston\, Malcolm Danare\, and Tony Roberts \nWhat could be scarier than an all-night “Horrorthon”? A group of film students finds out when they stage just such an event at an abandoned movie palace. They decide to screen a bizarre short called THE POSSESSOR\, whose creator\, Lanyard Gates\, killed his family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. As the festival proceeds\, the students are stalked by a mysterious killer. Has Gates survived to continue THE POSSESSOR’s deadly legacy? A loving homage to ’50s/’60s B-movies (the trio of flicks shown at the Horrorthon all have accompanying William Castle-style gimmicks)\, POPCORN is also an insanely fun horror/comedy in its own right\, celebrating the joys of old-fashioned creature features and ’80s-style stalk-and-slay. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/496990193110952/
