Terror Tuesday: Supernatural (35mm)
August 13, 2019 @ 9:30 pm - 11:00 pm
POSSESSION NEVER FELT SO GOOD.
In 1933, a NEW YORK TIMES review of SUPERNATURAL read, “Through camera wizardry, shows the spirit of a dead murderess entering the body of the wholesome Carole Lombard and causing her to behave like a savage.” Sold! SUPERNATURAL is 1930s horror on a raucous midnight bender. Written and directed by the same team responsible for the previous year’s WHITE ZOMBIE starring Bela Lugosi, this movie swaps Draculas and Frankensteins for elegant hauntings and surrealist mood. Plus there’s the legendary Carole Lombard, playing against her “screwball comedy” type in a powerful and mesmerizing role. This is the only horror movie that Lombard starred in, but her performance makes us wish that she made at least a thousand more. (Joseph A. Ziemba)
Before the feature, we’ll screen URSULA — a ghostly horror short from 1961!
