Taps & Tapes Presents: John Woo’s Bullet In the Head
November 16, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pmFree
John Woo is one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of the medium. His graceful, bombastic brand of action cinema has influenced countless artists over the last 30+ years, as movies like THE KILLER and HARD BOILED crossed over with international viewers well beyond their initial Hong Kong audiences. Now, Vulcan Video presents what may be his ultimate masterpiece: the rarely screened (and practically unavailable in the United States) Vietnam War tale of heroic bloodshed, BULLET IN THE HEAD.
The closest analogue to Woo’s Saigon tragedy is Michael CImino’s THE DEER HUNTER, yet even that film didn’t have to good sense to mix in a healthy amount of gun-fu with it’s tragic examination of shattered friendships and lost innocence. Sure, BULLET IN THE HEAD is undoubtedly Woo’s dreariest picture – tackling PTSD, mental illness, greed, corruption, and the often futile nature of revolution – but it still manages to own that same sense of poetic excess one expects from the maestro behind FACE/OFF. Few directors have ever understood the true beauty of violence like Woo has, and BULLET IN THE HEAD showcases some truly electric gun battles in-between all the histrionic emoting. So please, join us for this long-in-the-making event, as we discovered this pristine, uncut, 16mm letterboxed print in a South African archive, and waited a full two months for it to clear customs. Something tells us, it’s going to be entirely worth the wait.
THIS SCREENING IS INDOORS! Due to inclement weather, we are closing the store early so join us inside! As usual at Taps & Tapes, seating is free but limited (so get here early) and Vulcan Video will provide complimentary adult beverages while supplies last (but again, we encourage you to BYOB).
