Made between THE BROOD and VIDEODROME, SCANNERS finds filmmaker David Cronenberg at an aesthetic peak. In a plot straight out of a bronze age X-Men comic, a man with unstoppable telepathic powers finds himself locked in battle between the government and other “scanners” that are set on world domination. This gruesome and stylized film was Cronenberg’s breakout hit in the U.S., and it solidified his trademark melding of the visceral and the cerebral.
